A sidebar to the wars was the Muslim sultanate of Aceh, located on the western portion of Sumatra. Acehnese Sultan Alauddin Riyat Syeh (r. 1537-1571) requested Ottoman assistance against the Portuguese, who had conquered the strategic chokepoint of Malacca in 1511. Aceh had become a powerful regional force, threatening Malacca more than once. In 1568, the Ottomans managed to send two ships to Aceh, bringing with them experts in casting cannons. As a result, Aceh quickly developed the capability of making effective artillery, and it also learned how to build large ships in the Portuguese style. These large, well-armed Acehnese ships soon began to participate in the spice trade from Indonesia to the Red Sea (Peacock, 2018).
